25th April 1964; Photo of Local Hero Peter Locke who saved a young boy's life. Denis Fitzgerald, a 9 year old schoolboy from Mitchel's Crescent, had a narrow escape from death when he climbed a 35 foot high ESB pylon at Clonmore and touched the high tension cable. For 10 minutes his life was held in the balance by the instep of his foot which was jammed in one of the steel bars of the pylon preventing him from falling to the ground. In the meantime, another schoolboy, 13 year old Peter Locke rushed to the scene and without consideration for his personal safety, climbed the pylon in an effort to rescue his neighbour. Locke moved to a position higher than Fitzgerald and grasped him by the back of the neck. When he had a firm grip he released the trapped foot. Then he brought Fitzgerald slowly down to safety.
