1st January 1968; Four boys watch Garda Pat Malone's Ford Anglia that went over the side of the unprotected quay in Fenit when he misjudged the the turn between the cross wall and the west wall of the pier. Garda Malone escaped unharmed. The badly damaged car was lifted from the water by crane on Monday morning, 1st January.

The schools were temporarily closed due to inadequate heating and unsanitary conditions. The schools were: Ardfert, Banna, Barrow, Kilmoyley and Tubrid.
