17th August 1967; Mrs. Patricia Grey, Newcastle on Tyne, in St. Catherine's Hospital, Tralee after a road accident on the Derrymore Road. Mrs. Grey was on holiday in Blennerville with her husband and four children when their van, driven by Mr. Grey, collided with a tractor-drawn cock-lifter. A six foot long spike from the cock-lifter pierced the front of the van and went through Mrs. Grey's leg to a depth of three feet. Two ambulances and a medical team under surgeon Colm Galvin from the County Hospital administered an anaesthetic to Mrs. Grey on the roadside. Mr. Galvin and two assistants then slowly drew the two inc thick spike from the patient's leg. The fire brigade was called initially because it was thought that the spike would have to be cut from the tractor before it could be removed from Mrs. Grey's leg. However, this action was not taken because it was felt that the heat from the cutter would cause extra injury an pain to the patient. Mrs. Grey was then taken to St. Catherines Hospital for further surgery.

29th June 1964; A photo taken at Kerry Head where 26 year old Pat O'Connor of Meenogohane Causeway and Sargeant William McCarthy of Ballyheigue came to the rescue with a twenty foot canoe of two Dublin Merchant Seamen. The Dublin men, James Whelan and John Tyrell, had to abandon a disabled fishing vessel they had been ferrying from Kilronan, Aran to Dingle when the engine failed off Loop Head on Sunday evening. The boat drifted all night and though the men lighted tyres, threw up flares and hoisted a distress flag, nobody went to their assistance. When the boat struck the rocks at Bird's Island, the men put on life jakets and drifted for over two hours in the rough seas until picked up. By then John Tyrell was unconscious. He received artificial respiration but he died without regaining consciousness. The jury at the inquest returned a verdict of asphixia due to drowning as the cause of death.
