1st August 1965; Des Lavelle of Valentia Island caused quite a stir at the Irish spearfishing Championships in Valentia when he captured a 25lb conger eel. Des, who organised the event with Diarmuid Ring, was not an official competitor, but he proves the big ones were there to be caught.

28th December 1965; The Valentia Lifeboat removed a critically ill seaman, in a very heavy swell, from an American Freight five miles North West of Valentia, and rushed him to Knightstown. Charlie Humphrey, from New York, was taken by stretcher to Mrs Burke's Field where a helicopter landed and took him to St. Laurence's Hospital in Dublin for an emergency brain operation.
