February 1970; The Oranmore ship was abandoned off Kerry head when her engines broke down. After five days of storm the anchor cable snapped and the ship drifted its way southward and onto Banna strand. The Dutch tug, Friesland, was standing by in a bid to take the Oranmore in tow. The crew of the Oranmore were rescued by the Valentia lifeboat.
