Bill Verity with his Boat in Fenit
26th July 1966; Atlantic Sailor Bill Verity with his boat, the 'Nonoalca' in Fenit. Mr. Verity, a 40 year old Irish American from Florida, crossed the Atlantic alone in the 12 foot boat, that he built himself, setting the record for the smallest boat to cross the Atlantic. Leaving Florida on the 8th May, the 4,500 mile journey took 65 days. Mr. Verity wanted to prove that a Kerryman, St. Brendan, could have crossed the Atlantic in 'A Boat of Skin'. In the photo, Bill Verity prepares to return to Fort Lauderdale in Florida.
